The best movies about imposters and spies
There's a reason con artists, undercover agents, and people pretending to be someone they're not make for such good movies. You spend the whole runtime watching for the crack in the performance, waiting for one wrong answer to give it all away. That's also exactly the feeling behind Imposter Game, minus the felony charges. If you're in the mood for that particular kind of tension before or after a round, here are 15 movies that get it right.
1. Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Frank Abagnale Jr. talks his way into cockpits, hospitals, and courtrooms with nothing but confidence and a good story. It's basically a two-hour masterclass in the bluffing that wins an Imposter Game round.
2. The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Tom Ripley doesn't just lie about who he is, he becomes someone else entirely. A tense, slow-burn reminder that the best imposters commit fully instead of hedging their clues.
3. The Departed (2006)
Two moles, one on each side of the law, both one slip-up away from getting made. The paranoia of not knowing who's real is exactly the feeling a good round should leave you with.
4. Face/Off (1997)
A cop and a criminal literally swap faces. It's the most extreme identity-swap plot on this list, and a good reminder that some imposters go all in on the bit.
5. Sneakers (1992)
A team of security experts talks and hacks their way into places they don't belong. Great group heist energy for anyone who likes the social side of deception games.
6. The Great Impostor (1961)
Loosely based on a real con man who posed as a surgeon, a monk, and a prison warden, among others. The original title character, basically.
7. Dave (1993)
A regular guy impersonates the President of the United States and turns out to be better at the job than the real one. Lighter, funnier proof that nobody questions confidence.
8. The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997)
A tourist accidentally wanders into a real spy plot and everyone assumes he's an actor playing along. He never breaks character because he doesn't know there's a character to break.
9. Zoolander (2001)
A male model gets brainwashed into an assassination plot and nobody around him notices anything unusual. Sometimes the imposter gets away with it because no one's paying attention.
10. Notorious (1946)
Hitchcock's classic about an American agent who marries into a Nazi spy ring to feed intel back home. Old-school tension that still holds up as a study in staying calm under scrutiny.
11. Argo (2012)
A CIA operative and a group of American diplomats pose as a Hollywood film crew to escape Iran. The fake movie is more convincing than most real ones, which is the whole point.
12. White Chicks (2004)
Two FBI agents go undercover in the most conspicuous disguise imaginable and somehow no one clocks it. Peak commitment-over-subtlety energy.
13. The Great Gatsby (2013 / 1974)
Jay Gatsby built an entire identity from scratch to fit into a world that wouldn't have let him in otherwise. Not a spy movie, but arguably the most tragic imposter story on this list.
14. Bad Genius (2017)
A group of students runs an exam-cheating scheme across time zones, staying one step ahead of getting caught. High-stakes bluffing under a ticking clock.
15. Ocean's Eleven (2001)
The whole crew spends two hours pretending to be people they're not, in rooms full of people trained to spot exactly that. If your group likes this movie, they'll like this game.
Watched them all? Try being the imposter yourself
Every movie on this list comes down to the same question: can you keep the act together when everyone in the room is watching for a mistake? Imposter Game puts your friends in that exact spot. One player gets a secret word, one gets nothing, and the group has thirty seconds of clues to figure out who's bluffing. If you want to build a round around the theme, the Movies word list is a good place to start, and the full rules are here if you've never played.
